Our Story

In 1860, my great-grandfather and great-grandmother moved from Germany to Cincinnati, Ohio, with their two sons, Kirk and Gus, and they started RAU Construction in 1860. My grandfather, Herbert Julius Rau, was the third son born in 1903. Then they moved to Kansas City, MO. Gus and Kirk went to college, and Gus became the business manager of RAU Construction, and Kirk became the architect of the company. Herb, my grandfather, joined the Union and worked his way up to become a journeyman carpenter after high school. After years in the company, he became president. The company did only commercial and industrial construction.

In 1968, I spent a lot of summers in Kansas City alongside my grandfather and learned many aspects of construction, mainly roofing. I mastered these skills after high school graduation in Santa Barbara and San Jose, CA, as a journeyman roofer. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away in 1979.

I married and moved to Sonora, CA, and opened RAU Roofing in 2004. Overall, I have been roofing for 50 years.
